Price and license
Trame: Free to use; no recurring fee.
Embird: Basic license US$149; digitizing and photo-to-embroidery modules cost extra. Embird lists US$150 for Digitizing Tools and US$90 for Sfumato Stitch; applicable VAT extra.
Platform
Trame: Browser-based; image processing runs locally in the browser.
Embird: Windows desktop software; Mac use requires Wine or Parallels rather than a native macOS app.
Input and editing
Trame: PNG/JPEG artwork and supported DST, XXX, EXP stitch files; saves editable .trame projects.
Embird: Basic manages, converts, and edits existing designs; optional Studio tools digitize logos and Sfumato converts photos to embroidery.
Digitizing tools
Trame: Editable manual curves, closed fills and satin rails; image-based running contours, fixed/adaptive satin, tatami and decorative fills; editable layer sewing order.
Embird: Modular: Basic editor and manager; separate Digitizing Tools, Sfumato Stitch, lettering, and cross-stitch modules.
Embroidery formats
Trame: Imports DST, XXX, EXP; experimental exports DST, XXX, EXP.
Embird: Embird lists 70+ formats, including DST, PES, EXP, and XXX; check its read/write list for the exact format and variant.
Important notes
Trame: Exports are experimental. Optional underlay, compensation, and securing support specific stitch styles. Adaptive satin does not support pull compensation; fabric presets are editable starting values, and physical validation is still required.
Embird: The Basic purchase does not include digitizing modules. Upgrading the main program to a newer year can require a paid upgrade.

Embird's module choice changes the comparison

Embird Basic is primarily a manager and editor for existing embroidery designs. Creating new digitized designs from artwork calls for an optional module: Digitizing Tools for logos and shapes or Sfumato Stitch for photo-to-embroidery work. Embird lists US$149 for Basic, US$150 for Digitizing Tools, and US$90 for Sfumato, with VAT charged where applicable. Check the current bundle and upgrade terms before comparing a total price.

Trame is free to use and starts with image color reduction, region edits, and generated stitch paths in one browser editor. Its narrow format range and experimental machine exports make a physical test essential. It does not replace Embird's module-based editing and digitizing controls.

Desktop compatibility and file conversion

Embird is a Windows application. Its vendor documents Mac use through Wine or Parallels rather than a native Mac version. Embird advertises a broad format list, including DST, PES, EXP, and XXX. Trame currently imports and experimentally exports DST, XXX, and EXP, so Embird may fit better when converting among many machine formats or editing an established stitch library.

For a fresh PNG or JPEG, try the color-region preview first and inspect unwanted small areas before export. For an existing machine file, verify what source data remains editable; a stitch file does not recreate the original artwork in either workflow.
