How do I turn a PNG or JPG into a DST embroidery file?
Prepare PNG or JPG artwork, reduce colors, generate stitches, inspect paths, and export a DST embroidery file in Trame.

Can a PNG or JPG become a DST file?
Yes, but renaming .png or .jpg to .dst is not digitizing. PNG and JPEG hold pixels; DST holds needle movements and color changes. In Trame, import the picture, reduce it to color regions, generate stitch paths, and export DST. A clean logo or flat illustration is easier to simplify than a photograph full of gradients and tiny details.
Decide the finished size before simplifying the image. Details that look clear on a monitor may merge or disappear at a small embroidered size. A .trame project keeps the source image and settings available for later revision.
- Open the editor, select Add image in the toolbox, and choose a PNG or JPEG.
- Click an empty part of the hoop to deselect the image. Set hoop dimensions in Properties, then select the image again to adjust its Width, Height, and placement.
- In the selected image’s Properties, select Enable color reduction. Start with a small Maximum colors value and raise it only when another shade preserves a useful shape.
Remove unwanted areas before generating stitches
Compare Processed and Original in Properties. For an unwanted background, use Remove connected background for edge-connected pixels or the eye button beside a palette color to omit that color everywhere. The first option can preserve enclosed details of the same color; the second cannot. Minimum island size omits small regions measured in processed-preview pixels, so raise it gradually when specks create unwanted stitch areas.
Smoothing and Merge similar colors can reduce noisy regions. Dithering represents shading with small scattered areas and can make the path plan more complex. Changing Maximum colors, smoothing, or dithering can reset palette edits and hidden colors, so recheck exclusions afterward.
Generate, inspect, and export the DST
Select Generate stitches in Properties after the processed preview is ready. Choose Running outline for contours or Tatami fill for filled areas. The plan updates as you change maximum stitch length, row spacing, or fill angle. Switch the canvas to Stitches or Simulate and look for missing details, unexpectedly dense areas, and travel between separate shapes.
Open Export and choose DST when the current plan is ready. DST preserves sewing order and color changes but does not store exact RGB thread colors, so keep a separate record of the intended threads. Save a .trame project for later edits. Trame’s machine exports are experimental; check the usable hoop area and sew a sample on your material before production.
- Select Generate stitches and wait for the stitch count to appear.
- Inspect Stitches or Simulate, then return to palette or stitch settings if an area is missing or overcrowded.
- Select Export, choose DST, and save a .trame project alongside the machine file.
